Obituary for Velora L. Anderson
Velora L. Anderson, nee Sasse, age 100, of Helena, AL, formerly of Collinsville, IL, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 19, 2017 at the Chandler Health & Rehab nursing home in Alabaster, AL.

Born in 1917 to August C and Charlotte (Werner) Sasse near Shobonier IL, Velora grew up on the family farm and graduated from Vandalia High School. Velora was married to William I. (Andy) Anderson in 1942; they had one daughter, Charlotte (Anderson) Mayo. Over their 57 years of marriage, they enjoyed a rich life of travel and service to God and country.

Velora was a member of the American Rosie the Riveter Association, having worked in an ammunition plant in St Louis, MO while Andy served in World War II. During the war she also volunteered with the USO in St. Louis. In the course of Andy’s 20 year career in the US Army, the family lived in New Jersey, Indiana, Colorado, and Japan. Upon Andy’s retirement from the military, they returned to Velora’s home state of Illinois. In later years she was a 4H Leader, an expert seamstress, a terrific cook, and an active member of the Collinsville Church of Christ. In 2002 Velora moved to Birmingham, AL to be near her daughter and she became a member of the Shades Mountain Church of Christ.

The family wishes to thank the personnel at the The Oaks on Parkwood and Chandler Health & Rehab for the exceptional care they took of Velora, treating her with dignity and kindness.

Velora was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William (Andy), and one sister, Anna Fitzpatrick. She is survived by her daughter Charlotte, grandson David Mayo (Gretchen), and great-granddaughters Kai and Nyah Mayo. She was aunt to beloved nephews Paul Fitzpatrick, David Fitzpatrick (deceased), and Dennis Fitzpatrick and to niece/”other daughter” Anita Fitzpatrick. She felt strongly the importance of extended family and often hosted get-togethers with her cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Jan 7, 2018 from 4 to 7 p.m., at Allan & Ciuferi Funeral Home, Collinsville, IL.

The funeral service will be January 8, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. at Allan & Ciuferi Funeral Home in Collinsville, IL followed by burial at 1:15 p.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St Louis, MO.

Flowers may be sent to the funeral home; for those who wish to make a memorial gift, the family suggests the Disabled American Veterans (www.dav.org) or the USO (www.uso.org). Online condolences may be expressed at www.acfuneral.com.
