Obituary for Audrey M. LaSurs
Audrey M. LaSurs, nee Haig, age 90, of Collinsville, IL, born September 20, 1926 in Caseyville, IL, passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL.
Audrey worked at General Chemical in E. St. Louis, IL as a chemist during World War II until she married her beloved husband, Robert in 1948. She was the recipient of the 2nd experimental cochlear implant performed in the early 1960’s by Dr. Aylward. She started singing in the choir during high school and has continued in the church choir. Mrs. LaSurs crocheted and knitted baby hats for mission projects in Nicaragua and for numerous children-in-crisis charities. She also made many scarves, vests and afghans for family and friends, and most from patterns she created, each of them unique. Audrey was known for her infamous sugar cookies, pie crust and cobblers. It was never about her, as she always put her family first. She was a true Christian lady.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Collinsville, United Methodist Women and PEO Chapter IL in Belleville.
Audrey is preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. LaSurs, her parents, Alexander D. and Mary A. (nee Seipp) Haig, one brother, Irvin Haig and 7 sisters, Euphemia Haig, Inez Kuhlmann, Iva Mowe, Elvera Pazdera, Margaret Haig and twin sisters, Vernice Cox and Berniece Lunde.
Surviving are her three children, R. Bruce (Andrea Vent) LaSurs of Webster Groves, MO, Kristine (Dr. John) Beatty of Collinsville, IL and Robin (John) Guse of Troy, IL, one sister, Marilyn (Robert) Bussen of St. Cloud, FL, and four grandchildren, Emily Heslop of Belleville, IL, Megan (Dan) Daly of Festus, MO, Rachel (Erik) VanHyfte of Peoria, IL and Laura (Ben) Michael of Collinsville, IL.
Memorials are requested to the First United Methodist Church, Children’s Dyslexia Center or the charity of one’s choice and will be accepted at the church.
Memorial Visitation: Thursday, November 3, 2016 from 11:00 a. m. until 1:00 p. m. at the First United Methodist Church, 207 West Church St., Collinsville, IL.
Memorial Service: Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 1:00 p. m. at the church with Pastor Mark Horn officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Collinsville, IL.
