Velora L. Anderson, nee Sasse, age 100, of Helena, AL, formerly of Collinsville, IL, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 19, 2017 at the Chandler Health & Rehab nursing home in Alabaster, AL.
Born in 1917 to August C and Charlotte (Werner) Sasse near Shobonier IL, Velora grew up on the family farm and graduated from Vandalia High School. Velora was married to William I. (Andy) Anderson in 1942; they had one daughter, Charlotte (Anderson) Mayo. Over their 57 years of marriage, they enjoyed a rich life of travel and service to God and country.
Velora was a member of the American Rosie the Riveter Association, having worked in an ammunition plant in St Louis, MO while Andy served in World War II. During the war she also volunteered with the USO in St. Louis. In the course of Andy’s 20 year career in the US Army, the family lived in New Jersey, Indiana, Colorado, and Japan. Upon Andy’s retirement from the military, they returned to Velora’s home state of Illinois. In later years she was a 4H Leader, an expert seamstress, a terrific cook, and an active member of the Collinsville Church of Christ. In 2002 Velora moved to Birmingham, AL to be near her daughter and she became a member of the Shades Mountain Church of Christ.
The family wishes to thank the personnel at the The Oaks on Parkwood and Chandler Health & Rehab for the exceptional care they took of Velora, treating her with dignity and kindness.

She is survived by her daughter Charlotte, grandson David Mayo (Gretchen), and great-granddaughters Kai and Nyah Mayo.
